Nebraska Deem & Pass? LB 1110 Proved Shenanigans Not Limited to D.C.

Posted by Shellinda As a couple of Americans who have spent too much time focused on Washington, D.C. and not enough within our state (but making an effort to change this), we wonder whether the maneuvers regarding a certain piece of legislation introduced last session is common practice in the Nebraska Unicameral. We suspect it […] Continue reading

Nebraska Appleseed Not Happy: Judge Refuses Injunction

Nebraska Appleseed is a Lincoln-based entity that seems to be on the wrong side of just about every issue limited government types are concerned about.  If it costs money, grows government, facilitates the welfare state, promotes a “green” agenda, and potentially raises taxes, odds are high…Nebraska Appleseed would be for it. GiN’s “Deserving of Darts” […] Continue reading

GiN on KLKN TV: Tea Party Movement Impact In Nebraska

Lincoln’s KLKN TV contacted me Friday, requesting an interview regarding recent developments in the primary elections. The reporter, Stephanie Costanzo, informed KLKN had done a story everyday this week on the tea party’s impact and they were looking for the local perspective. Did the successes in other places in the country provide any momentum to […] Continue reading

Politician Deafness & Other Natural Phenomenon

By Shelli Dawdy Why do federal elected officials seem to be impervious to the objections of their constituents, specifically when those objections are voiced in large numbers? That phenomenon was very well illustrated by the drama that reached a crescendo on October 3, 2008. Congress passed the bailout bill (TARP) despite call ratios into Congressmen […] Continue reading

Feds Gone Wild? Sure. But What About NE Officials?

By Shelli Dawdy I’m a frustrated taxpayer. Very frustrated. Where’s the frustration coming from? Right here in Nebraska’s capital. As I’ve been looking at Nebraska’s budget, I’ve been very disappointed to realize just how many of those dollars come from the federal government. Recently, I shared two charts that quantify Nebraska’s revenue sources in graphic detail. […] Continue reading

NE Budget: Senators Hope Feds Will Bail Us Out

In late June, Speaker of the Nebraska Legislature, Mike Flood, convened an Ad Hoc Committee meeting that is part of the special LR 542 process to deal with the projected 2011 – 2013 budget shortfall. It seems as if our legislature is too eager to accept federal money and federal strings. Continue reading

Federal Funding Tap Dance: Are States Puppets Or Partners?

When considering how to get out of the way of the growing red ink tsunami gushing out of D.C., one of the first questions that comes to mind is what states can do about it. Many federal programs could be rejected by states, but they aren’t. Obviously, they want the money. Prior governors and legislators have opted to accept federal funds in an effort to tout how much they accomplish while in office, handing the strings and increased obligations to the next set of officials. Continue reading
